What Notable Women Are Wearing, including Louise Brooks

I am always researching Louise Brooks, and just recently, I came across a newspaper series titled "What Notable Women Are Wearing." From what I could gleam, this nationally syndicated series was authored by Marie Munneux, who was described as an International Illustrated News Fashion Authority. (Her name was not on every piece.) Typically, individual pieces include a feature photo of a well known woman wearing fashionable clothes of the time. 

These notable women might include actresses - like Norma Shearer, Edna Purviance, Yola d'Avril, or Jeanne Eagels, or other famous or well known individuals like Lady Astor, Mrs. Cornelius Vanderbilt Whitney, or Belle Bart, a noted astrologist. A paragraph or two of text might tell who the celebrity is, where the picture might have been taken, and describe the clothes they are wearing. 

I found two entries in the series which featured Louise Brooks. Below, I've included two pieces which, although they feature the same content, have a slightly different layout. 

For fun, here are a few of the other entries in the series which I came across, including Joan Crawford, Aileen Pringle, Gertrude Olmstead and the great Pearl White.

I sure wish these late 1920s newspaper fashion pictures reproduced better, but what can you do.... Still, they offer a snapshot into the Jazz Age. The second paragraph in the clipping that follows
pokes fun at the era's fashions, which some thought too revealing.

Day of Silents Announced for Saturday, December 2

The San Francisco Silent Film Festival has announced its annual "Day of Silents" will take place one month from today, on Saturday, December 2 at the Castro Theater in San Francisco. More information may be found HERE.

THE WILDCAT (Die Bergkatze)

Before director Ernst Lubitsch left Germany to ply his famous ‘Touch’ in Hollywood, he made a series of comedies that gave hints at what was to come. The Wildcat is his last German comedy and his most riotously zany. Subtitled ‘A Grotesque in Four Acts,’ Wildcat makes use of extravagant set design and eccentric frame shapes that lend a surrealistic edge to its antic energy. Pola Negri’s Rischka leads a gang of mountain bandits who ambush Lieutenant Alexis (Paul Heidemann) on his way to the local fortress, leaving him pant-less (and smitten) on the ice. Film writer John Gillett called the film “both an anti-militarist satire and a wonderful fairy tale.”

Clarence Brown's rousing film displays a perfect blend of elements—romance, swashbuckling, a modicum of humor, and the great Rudolph Valentino! Not to mention the splendid production design by William Cameron Menzies and gorgeous camerawork by George Barnes. After Valentino's Russian lieutenant rejects the amorous attentions of Catherine the Great (Louise Dresser), she orders him arrested. Instead, he flees and becomes a masked avenger intent on righting the wrongs visited upon his father and his countrymen by loutish nobleman Kryilla Trouekouroff (James A. Marcus). But the nobleman has a beautiful daughter (Vilma Banky)...

Luminous Anna May Wong goes from a fan-dancing carnival act to an artist garret and finally to the French Riviera where she accompanies a wealthy art patron around Monte Carlo, draped in haute couture. Wong left Hollywood in search of roles more fitting her talents than the racially-circumscribed ones at home. This Weimar title showcases her magnetism—when Wong is onscreen, you can't look away.

Harold Lloyd's bumpkin salesclerk comes up with a publicity stunt that will bring attention to his department store and earn him the money to marry his sweetheart—scale the 12-story building like a human fly! Shot in downtown Los Angeles, the stunt has given us one of the most iconic images of the silent era—Lloyd precariously hanging over the city street, dangling from a broken clock. James Agee wrote: "Each new floor is like a new stanza in a poem; and the higher and more horrifying it gets, the funnier it gets."

Before Harry goes to prison, he leaves his baby girl on the doorstep of a wealthy couple to keep her out of the clutches of his no-good wife Lilly (Olga Baclanova) and tasks Froggy with keeping close tabs. But Froggy is no match for Lilly...

Speaking of Louise Brooks and Pandora's Box, and speaking of Weimar Cinema

Speaking of Louise Brooks and Pandora's Box, and speaking of Weimar Cinema . . . be sure and check out the newly updated WeimarCinema.org website. Although created by film scholars for film scholars, this resourceful website might well be of interest to everyone interested in silent film... and what's more, the site is bursting with information, essays, and links to resources about films and filmmaking in German-speaking world between the two World Wars.

As the site explains on its About page, "The website WeimarCinema.org is designed to foster and inspire new scholarship about Weimar cinema. Under the heading RESEARCH, we provide an overview of current publications (for the moment restricted to work done in Germany and the United States), including online blogs and websites." One of those website, I am proud to say, is the Louise Brooks Society, whose description reads:

"This blog and website center around the American film star Louise Brooks who acted in such iconic German films as Diary of a Lost Girl and Pandora’s Box. The Blog also contains numerous links to international film websites and magazines about the Jazz Age."

The "numerous links" referred to above exist on both the Louise Brooks Society website and the here, on the LBS blog. When I compiled them over the course of a couple-three days last year, they were one of the most complete list of links to silent film era magazines just about anywhere. Be sure and check it out HERE on the Silent Film Links page.


As the site's webpage also notes, "WeimarCinema.org has its roots in the sourcebook The Promise of Cinema: German Film Theory, 1907- 1933, edited by Anton Kaes, Nicholas Baer and Michael Cowan and published by the University of California Press in 2016. In this book, the editors gathered and curated more than 250 historical documents that contemplate the nature and function of the new medium of film, its promise and potential. The book’s media-archaeological approach opened up past debates to current discussions about new media and sought to reconsider what cinema was when it began." It is a tremendous book, one which I am very pleased to own. It is well worth checking out, as it the adjunct Promise of Cinema website.

Pandora's Box screens at Paramount theater in Oakland, CA on May 6

Breaking news.... The celebrated German silent film, Pandora's Box starring Louise Brooks, will be shown at the Paramount theater in Oakland, California on Saturday, May 6. And what's more, this live cinema event will feature live musical accompaniment by the Club Foot Orchestra and the San Francisco Conservatory of Music. From the San Francisco Silent Film Festival website: On May 6, 2023, the Club Foot Orchestra will join forces with San Francisco Conservatory of Music to accompany G.W. Pabst’s 1929 masterpiece Pandora’s Box at Oakland’s magnificent Paramount Theatre. The film stars the radiant Louise Brooks whose mesmerizing performance as the sexually adventurous Lulu catapulted her to worldwide fame. Here is praise for Brooks through the years:

SFSFF will screen the restoration by Angela Holm and David Ferguson in a DCP from the Deutsche Kinemathek.

Tickets are now on sale for SFSFF's May 6 event. All tickets ($35 general admission) are being sold through the Paramount's official ticketing partner Ticketmaster and there is a $3 per-ticket fee. Those who would like to avoid Ticketmaster fees can visit the Paramount's Box Office in Oakland between 12:00 noon and 5:00 pm on Fridays to buy tickets in person. SFSFF members receive a $5 discount per ticket.

The Louise Brooks Society, a statement, something to get off my chest

I launched the "Louise Brooks Society" website in 1995. I did so because I had recently "discovered" the actress and was enthused about connecting with others of like-mind, sharing not only information and images but also the small discoveries which came from my ongoing research into Brooks' life and career. For me, the Louise Brooks Society is a labor of love to which I have given a fair amount of my time.

Over the years, a handful of other Louise Brooks websites and fan pages have come and gone. With the launch of Facebook, even more groups have sprung up, including one similarly called the "Louise Brooks Appreciation Society." I figured the more interest in Brooks the better.... I would do my thing, and others could do their thing. Live and let live.... And that's the way it was for a good number of years. I never felt I had "ownership" over Louise Brooks, and never tried to control how others expressed their interest or passion in the actress. "It's all good," as they say. I have, as well, on numerous occasions, supported and promoted other's projects, be it another fan's art, video, article, novel, documentary, or webpage. There was plenty of Louise Brooks to go around.

However, not everyone feels the way I do. The petty internet trolls who have attacked the Louise Brooks Society and its social media accounts are a nuisance who are, in effect, trying to control Louise Brooks. Just today, they had Etsy remove a 25 year-old t-shirt I had for sale by claiming this vintage piece of clothing, lawfully manufactured by a third party decades ago, somehow infringed upon their intellectual property rights. Bull, shit. They have also managed to get the Louise Brooks Society Instagram account suspended, and now, its 5300 followers no longer get their daily dose of our Miss Brooks via the LBS. My apologies to those 5300 Louise Brooks-loving Instagramers, but my appeals have gone nowhere. The same thing happened to the Louise Brooks Society fan page on Facebook, which had gained a similar number of followers and has also disappeared. [For the record, the LBS LinkedIn, Patreon, CafePress, POST and LinkTree accounts have also been attacked on the grounds of alleged infringement of intellectual property.]

Admittedly, these attacks have left me feeling a bit discouraged, but not undaunted. I still have my Louise Brooks Society website and blog, and I still have pride in the fact that the Louise Brooks Society helped bring both the Barry Paris biography and Louise Brooks' own Lulu in Hollywood back into print. I am also proud of the considerable research I have done, of the many articles I have written, the four books I have published, the various events I put on or participated in, the exhibits I curated, the books and documentary films I have helped inspire, and the films I have helped restore. I did all this, and more, for one simple reason -- to bring greater awareness to the life and films of someone I find endlessly fascinating.

One thing that I am proud of is the acknowledgement given me by the estate of Louise Brooks, with whom I have worked on a project (the retrieval of some rare material from an archive). They thanked me for placing that material in their hands, and for all that I had done.

Someone once said, "living well is the best revenge." The Louise Brooks Society will go on. At present I am working on a new book, with another in the works. (To get the latest news from the Louise Brooks Society, please subscribe to this blog or the LBS Twitter account.)

The Louise Brooks Society is a pioneering silent film website. And, I think it has made its mark. Not more than a few years after I started the site, I met the much loved film critic Roger Ebert, who told me he had used the LBS to research the actress and her films. I was thrilled. I also felt I was doing something right.

A few years after that, Ebert tweeted about an article I had written for the Huffington Post about the 1928 film, Beggars of Life. In his tweet, Ebert encouraged Kino Lorber to release the film on DVD, and they did, a few years later. (You can hear my audio commentary on the DVD/Blu-Ray!)

Others, like Louise Brooks fan (and 8th Doctor Who) Paul McGann have praised my website, as have others both in and outside the world of silent film and film history. What follows is some of the press and praise the site has received in magazines and newspapers from around the world. This first clipping shown here, from May 23, 1996, came as a big surprise. Happy New Year from the Louise Brooks Society

Happy New Year from the Louise Brooks Society. What a year it has been. I figure there is no better way to celebrate than to share a couple of 'swonderful pictures of Louise Brooks, and one less 'swonderful picture of me. 

My love and appreciation to all the fans of Louise Brooks who have supported me and this website for its 27 years of existance. Over the years, individuals and newspaper and magazines have said have said some rather nice things about me and the Louise Brooks Society. But none beats what I was told my the estate of Louise Brooks earlier this year; he simply thanked me for all that I have done. That means a lot. 

 
 


I had hoped to upload a couple of these celebratory pictures of Louise Brooks to the Louise Brooks Society Instagram account ( @louisebrookssociety ), but due to the pathetic actions of an individual who shall go unnamed, the LBS Instagram account has been suspended.

Happy Holidays from the Louise Brooks Society

 

Happy Holidays from the Louise Brooks Society. Here follows a snapshot of the Louise Brooks bulb which hangs on my Christmas tree. It is handmade, and crafted by a fan; I believe I purchased it on eBay a number of years ago -- perhaps as long ago as ten or fifteen or more years ago (that is, way before anyone trademarked her name). Does anyone else have hand made Louise Brooks ornaments? I would love to see them.

Louise Brooks Society now on Mastadon

I launched the Louise Brooks Society website way back in the summer of 1995. I was a pioneer. The LBS was one of the first websites devoted to silent film and/or a silent film actor. Today, my website is certainly one of the longest lasting. 

Along the way, I branched out. There was a Louise Brooks Society MySpace page at one point, as well as a TribeNet page, and a streaming music channel (RadioLulu) on Live365. Things come and go. This blog dates back to 2002, when I first started writing about Louise Brooks on LiveJournal. In 2009, I transitioned the LBS blog to Blogger, where it has been ever since. (Some of the other Louise Brooks Society social media accounts can be found in the right hand column. Or, check out the LBS on LinkTree.)

The LBS has been on Twitter since 2009. (See https://twitter.com/LB_Society) To date, I have tweeted more than 6,150 times and gained some 5,200 followers. Not bad considering this is a niche interest.

With all the changes and uncertainty around Twitter these days (I think you know what I mean, as some are predicting its demise), I figure it is best to have a back-up, twitter-like account - an alternative app. I plan to stay with Twitter for the time being, but have recently set up an account on Mastadon. That account can be found at https://sfba.social/@LouiseBrooksSociety.

I would encourage anyone interested in exploring the brave new world of Mastadon to check it out. The Louise Brooks Society already has 10 followers, and a few of its three posts have been favored and boosted. Hooray! Come on and join the smart set.

Happy birthday to Louise Brooks BOTD in 1906

Happy birthday to the dancer, silent film star and 20th century icon Louise Brooks, who was born on this day in 1906 in Cherryvale, Kansas. Not surprisingly, little (Mary) Louise Brooks started getting press from the day she was born. The first image shown below, a clipping dated November 14, 1906, comes from the Cherryvale Daily Republican. It is followed by another clipping, from the Cherryvale Daily News, which appeared that same day on the newspaper's front page.

A good brainduster for fans of silent film

Here is something I ran across the other day, a picture puzzle in a 1926 issue of Exhibitor's Herald. The challenge is to identify the silent film stars hiding behind their masks. I think I can identify at least a few right off, and one of them is a famous actor who twice worked with Louise Brooks. Another, number two, is given away by his headgear. How many of the 24 can you identify? It is a good brainduster.

Captain of Her Soul: The Life of Marion Davies

As most fans of Louise Brooks are aware, Brooks was well acquainted with the silent film star Marion Davies. Brooks spent time at the famed Hearst Castle, and also visited Davies at her beachfront estate. Brooks also knew Marion Davies' niece, Pepi Lederer. This circle of friendship is sketched in "Marion Davies Niece," one of the essays in Brooks' own book, Lulu in Hollywood

In some ways, Brooks' and Davies' stories are similar. Powerful men plucked both from the Ziegfeld Follies, and thrust each into the movies. Davies was ambitious. Brooks, less so. Nevertheless, both struggled to define themselves, to lead the lives they wanted to live, and to be in charge of their own destinies. Both also, to a degree, fought to overcome a legend which was imposed on their latter lives.

I mention all this because just out is Captain of Her Soul: The Life of Marion Davies, a promising new biography by Lara Gabrielle published by the University of California Press. Long in the works, this new biography is a book every silent film buff will want to read. I just recently received a copy, and can't wait to get started. This is my kind of biography, thoroughly researched and full of footnotes!

Here is the publisher supplied description: "From Marion Davies's humble days in Brooklyn to her rise to fame alongside press baron William Randolph Hearst, the public life story of the film star plays like a modern fairy tale shaped by gossip columnists, fan magazines, biopics, and documentaries. If you happened to see the outstanding documentary on William Randolph Hearst broadcast on PBS last year, then you were also likely intrigued by the role this diminutive film star played in the life of the millionaire publishing tycoon. Lara Gabrielle spoke in that documentary, and has a lot to say about this plucky film star who always tried to live life on her own terms (despite living in the shadow of a giant of a man, Hearst). Did she succeed? Was she the captain of her soul? What price did she pay? Read Lara Gabrielle's new biography to find out!

If you have never seen a Marion Davies film, then you are missing out. The Patsy (1928) and Show People (1928) are each outstanding. Davies is charming and funny in both films, each of which I consider classics and must-see viewing. Those are two of my favorites, though others like, Little Old New York (1923) and Zander the Great (1925) and Beverly of Graustark (1926), are also very good. I have seen each and like them all. Check them out, and then read Captain of Her Soul: The Life of Marion Davies.

More on the newly restored Louise Brooks film The Street of Forgotten Men

Pop Matters has just published my article on the newly restored Louise Brooks film, The Street of Forgotten Men. Please check it out.

The piece, "Restored Silent Film The Street of Forgotten Men Debuts Louise Brooks," looks at the film and the efforts that went into its preservation. I spoke with Robert Byrne of the San Francisco Silent Film Festival, who led the team that restored the film, creating a "filmic bridge" to replace the missing second reel.

The restored film will premiere at the San Francisco Silent Film Festival on Tuesday, May 10, 2022 at the historic Castro theater. (Runtime: 74 min -- Print Source: SFSFF Collection -- Format: 35mm) More information about that event can be found HERE.


The May 10th screening will be accompanied by the great Donald Sosin. He has been creating and performing silent film music for fifty years, playing for major festivals, archives, and DVD recordings. He has been resident accompanist at New York’s Film Society of Lincoln Center, the Museum of the Moving Image, and the Brooklyn Academy of Music. His scores are heard regularly on Turner Classic Movies and his music accompanies films on more than fifty DVD releases. Donald has performed at SFSFF since 2007.

Dates and films set for first ever Cleveland Silent Film Festival

The dates and line-up of films have been announced for the first ever Cleveland Silent Film Festival and Colloquium. The multi-film, multi-day series of events begins February 13 and runs through February 20. It looks to be an impressive event. A complete listing of festival and colloquium events is below. A consortium of five area institutions has come together to put on the week-long Cleveland Silent Film Festival and Colloquium. The 2022 Cleveland Silent Film Festival is a new venture planning exciting programs of silent era classics accompanied by top silent film music specialists as well as workshops for area musicians interested in learning to play for silent films. 

 The newly formed Festival will screen four feature films, and a few shorts. However, the main attraction or "star" of the Festival is not a film or actor or director, but rather the Cleveland-born film score composer, J.S. Zamecnik, whose music will be featured and performed by the Mont Alto Motion Picture Orchestra. I have seen them accompany a number of silent films at the San Francisco Silent Film Festival, and they really are outstanding. I also own the CD pictured at the bottom of this post. If there name sounds familiar, it is likely because they provided the musical accompaniment to the KINO Lorber release of the 1928 Louise Brooks film, Beggars of Life.
